The Nixon White House Staff Super 8 Films - 1969-1973 - Film (16mm)

Saturday, March 3, 2007

I am obsessed with Richard Nixon. His defensive political career and awkward personal life, and the ultimate disgrace he made of the Presidency never ceases to intrigue me. At once he is a liar, full of aggression and insecurity, yet a family guy with loving tendencies--and he is a rather persuasive writer. For every dirty trick of his political career I have a sense that there was always a conflicting voice inside him that diminished his self-confidence. I can't help but see him as a social outcast who would do anything to be popular. His problem, of course, is that he never dared to consider the consequences of compromising his character to please others--then again, maybe his character was never truly defined, making it that much easier to blend in with the crowd, to lay fallow as a leader. All of this has been written upon extensively, so without further pretense of figuring out his character myself, I'll stop here.

Suffice it to say for now that I've got my hands on a small library of Nixon biographies, Watergate histories, memoirs, and historical documents to keep me guessing; I even have an article being published on the Watergate scandal and All The President's Men (that should be out sometime in 2008, I'll keep you posted so you can buy the book.) All of that said, when I saw that the Chicago Filmmakers Film Series was screening The Nixon White House Staff Super 8 Films, well, I squealed a lot; but then I was off to that show with purpose.

The films were recorded between the years 1969 and 1973, and later confiscated by the FBI during the Watergate investigation. They were actually the property of former Assistant for Domestic Affairs, John Ehrlichman (one of the primary orchestrator's of the Watergate break-in and dirty tricks campaign), but after he resigned in April 1973 they became U.S. government property under the Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act of 1974 (PRMPA). Of the 14 hours of film taken, we saw roughly 75 minutes of footage ranging from press briefings and ceremonies (of much pomp and circumstance), to footage of Air Force air shows and Navy boats. Looking at the latter you would have no idea it was related to Nixon, because he and his staff never appear (at least not that I noticed), and is focused on the planes and ships instead. Yes, don't forget, they are home movies; inevitably there are lulls of boredom.

The film stock is more valuable for the fact that it was Nixon's staff that shot it. A good chunk of the administration--Ehrlichman, H.R. Haldeman (Nixon's Chief of Staff, and perhaps the toughest goon on his team), Larry Higby (Haldeman's assistant), and Dwight Chapin (Deputy Assist. to the President)--all played cinematographer. I recognized Ehrlichman in a few shots, but they were fleeting. In a ceremony that took place in November 1971, Indira Ghandi is on the south lawn of the White House, right alongside Nixon. It was one of the first times I had seen Nixon walk; his gait is as awkward as his personality. Pat Nixon is passed around shaking hands (and looking quite beautiful and thin in her skirts and gowns); but she looks stifled and over-directed. I think she was more assertive than she appears.

There are no sound strips to the films. About 20 of us sat in the velvet curtained room sealed off from even a fleck of light, and only the click of the projector in the air. Almost immediately the silence gave way to unsolicited audience commentary; harmless whispering that led to veritable lectures from Whoever That Old Guy In The Back Is. A couple guys behind us were up in arms about the absence of Trish and Julie Nixon (Pat and Dick's daughters), so for them, whoever they are, here's a shot of Trish on her wedding day, June 12, 1971.

Also, and on an unrelated note, I love this picture; Richard and Pat at the beach in San Clemente, CA.

Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny - 2006 - DVD

Friday, March 2, 2007

Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny turned out to be one of the best comedies of 2006, but there was hardly a buzz about it. It's chock-full of Jack Black's signature swearing (I wish I could say the f-word like he does), and appearances from Amy Poehler, Tim Robbins, Fred Armisen, plus John C. Reilly as Sasquatch in a mushroom tripping sequence!

A review I wrote is copied below...

How Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny was overlooked by the Academy last year isn’t clear. It’s “The Greatest Motion Picture of All Time”—it’s in the movie’s tagline. If it is not the #1 film of 2006 (very painful to admit), or even the second best, it ought to be awarded at least a cool third place finish. Tenacious D takes the Musical genre to a new level, snaking together the raucous mindset of metal music and the raw comedy of Jack Black, revving us up to live vicariously through their rock fantasy.

Jack Black and fellow Tenacious D band member (the movie is based on their actual band) Kyle Gass are themselves living a rock fantasy in the film. In real life, their songs are more funny than head-rocking (though they are awesome musical talents), and the same is true in the film—but not according to their on-screen personas, JB (Jack Black) and KG (Kyle Gass). Think of it as a mock-Rockumentary, with a lot of mullets (Ben Stiller), beat up waitresses (Amy Poehler), and homeless murderer types with one leg and a Russian accent (Tim Robbins).

Little JB (Troy Gentile—an uncanny Jack Black look-alike) leaves home in Kickapoo, MO where his outraged old dad (played by Meat Loaf—in his first onscreen singing appearance since 1975’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show) forbids him from playing heavy metal, which propels JB out into the cold world—but not before an exhorting speech from the talking poster of former Black Sabbath front man, James Dio, a.k.a. the Devil of rock himself.

Once in Hollywood JB meets soul mate, KG whose $200.00 “royalty checks” roll in under the guise of stipend check from his mom. “At the break of noon” they begin training for rock superstardom. Practicing “power slides,” (a maneuver where epic rockers glide across the stage on their knees, guitar at full-throttle) and playing video games—it’s the mundane stoner life, and probably the real back-story for most rockers; the dream life-against-the-man demythicized.

Their first jam “Master Exploder,” brings new meaning to the phrase “blow your mind,” as Black and Gass are supra versions of themselves in Tenacious D: louder, rock-ier, and in their greatest test of strength of all, able to do more “cock push-ups.” (Strangely, that’s never more than one—you do the math.)

They're on a mission: to get the “Pick of Destiny,” a guitar pick made from a chipped tooth of Satan. It is your destiny to see how they will defeat Satan in a rock-off and go through groovy mushroom trip with Sasquatch (John C. Reilly) to do it.

The Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny DVD extras, to put it aptly, rock. Listening to them, one might wet them self with laughter, rather than be lulled to sleep by tepid interviews with actors who praise the director—which is common practice on DVD extras these days. Instead, director Liam Lynch addresses us directly, unabashedly: “we have the most kick-ass deleted scenes ever,” he says, “I only got through making this movie knowing I could show you this stuff on the DVD . . . the precious golden nuggets, the deleted scenes.”

Tenacious D has a deleted scenes selection so well crafted as to be another movie in itself. In fact, a number of the scenes star single instances of comedians like David Koechner (of The Naked Trucker and T-Bones series on Comedy Central), who would have otherwise been left on the cutting room floor. A car chase sequence mimics KG’s video game, with point value graphics over pedestrians’ heads and a blippy analogue computer soundtrack; this had to be cut from the final film too.

The extras, which include a mess of outtakes, a “making of” feature for the film and music video; an “In The Studio” session with Black and Gass laying down tracks and being jackasses; plus a segment of trailers, have not even hit their pinnacle until the Feature Commentaries begin: one with director Liam Lynch, another with Jack Black and Kyle Gass. The latter version serving as a veritable improv act with Black, who says the f-word with such fluidity, such style, as to be an inspiration; the f-word is a revelation. Swearing never sounded so good.

Don’t forget to look at the credits, because there's a long list of names in comedy contributed to Tenacious D. Black and Gass had high ambitions: “We wanted to make the Citizen Kane of Comedy,” they say, “Citizen D, if you will.”

Tenacious D joins the likes of Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Dodgeball, and TV show 30 Rock as a way to showcase all of comedy's best. It’s like a club of comedians riffing off one other for two hours; they mock stereotypes and pop culture—which of course includes themselves: the chubby middle-aged rockers they know they could never be, but awesomely and un-self-consciously pursue anyway.

Check out my swank new review of Claude Chabrol's latest film in Four Magazine! It's up now, peeps, so read it!

reunion

T-Minus: 28 days...

Location: Salmond Hall

Objective: Home

alrighty things were looking good again people of the innerweb. after my getting lost in the woods of the botanic gardens i thought i'd lost the trail of the watery leith aqua duck... however thanks to the intervention of the helpful security staff i was back on the trail of the stream.

emerging from the garden though things were looking easy peasy... my destination lay only a single block ahead. directly across from the garden gates and everything. just to make sure i walked preciously along the leith which sunk a few metres below the sidewalk. i didn't take my eyes off it until i lost track of the leith due to a parking lot...

not just any parking lot mind you, but rather the lot of my destination...

oh RIGHT!!! i'm so sorry people of the webwide world! i totally forgot to tell you what my destination was or more importantly who i was looking for!

where is my brain the size of a peanut been lately?!?

well rather then spoil the surprise i'll just keep telling you the story...

my destination was salmond hall. a student residence. it was here that i hoped to find myself a permanent home in new zealand and thus meet the first of my criteria for the government!

all i had to do was find the one person i knew in new zealand... the university claimed this is where he lived... i had no choice but to believe the universities information. i figured why not isn't being smart and giving out information their job?

but even more critical then this question was the person i sought here?

boy was my luck holding out today! he sure was!

my legal guardian, craig, was indeed staying here... meaning i had a hope of staying with him...

now craig wasn't too surprised to see me... unlike the last time i showed up unannounced at someone from the tyrrell's doorstep... he predicted that i'd make my way to him sooner or later...

craig let me into his room... very nice i thought. be a perfect new haunt for my new life in NZ... but wasn't going to be as easy a solution at i thought.

you see craig was still very very annoyed with me over the supposed "incident" i'd caused when i "smuggled" myself over here in his bag... he got held up in costumes and the government had been giving him some trouble about going to skool here due to it... i guess... not that i know ANYTHING about how i got into his bag...

i told craig all about my situation...

now me and craig we go way back... he after all was the one who hatched and raised me... so i know him pretty good... i was a difficult hatchling to be sure, and i've made craig mad lots of times before... but this time i could tell he was REALLY mad with me... i thought for a second he'd turf me out for sure...

suddenly to my surprise he said he'd let me crash with him TILL my deadline. if i didn't find a different place at that point though craig said he'd let the government do what it wanted with me...

oh man people of the web wide world i'm feeling kinda bad. i think i might have actually caused craig some real grief... NOT that i had ANYTHING to do with my being in his bag... just craig was the one guy who usually looked out for me... and now even he is upset with me...

i'll make it up to him though! now that i at least have a roof over my head and a base of operations i'll be able to focus on getting my criteria done in no time! then i'll be able to work on making something of myself, and pay craig back for his troubles!

home-garden security (lost part 2)

T-Minus: 28 days...

Location: Botanic Gardens
Objective: In Progress

oh man people of the innerweb have i done it this time!

the clock is still ticking in my countdown against the government, and here i go wasting a WHOLE day by getting lost... in the woods of ALL places! we dinos have a reputation as natural forest dwellers...

well to be honest it wasn't the worst thing ever. i actually enjoyed just wandering around in the forest a while. it's really dense along the hilly side of the place... my inner dinosaur was very content stalking around it.

however as of early this morning i realized i was missing precious time that could solve my crisis!!!

now the only problem was how to get myself unlost?

fortunately a pair of kind, diligent, and heroic university campus security patrol heard my scre... uh i mean calm cool collected scre... errr calls for help... (and no matter what they say my version is true... trust me... ha ha ha ha oh boy)

they were responding to reports of a large lizard loose in the park. they seemed surprised when i told them i hadn't seen one... though it must have been behind me at first as when they first saw me they both screamed "THERE IT IS!"

once i'd talked to them they both relaxed a lot. i must be a calming influence or something cause with a large man eating lizard on the loose i was kinda freaked out myself...

they were really nice and helpful once i explained my situation, and they gave me some great directions to get back on course to my destination.

what do you know? they were totally on the ball. within minutes i was back on the trail, and back by the leith!

who thought from shows like star trek that security were such nice and real people... i mean these guys didn't even wear red. just goes to show don't trust everything you see on TV (just most of it!).

continuing through the rest of the park it looks like a really sweet place to chill. sadly i didn't have the time for such leisurely pursuits, and was only able to check out the facilities from afar as i walked. have to make a note to visit this place again sometime more thoroughly.

there's all sorts of stuff though, and it was plainly visible as i walked around. green houses (though their badly mislabelled... what being all glass and all), cafes, a duck pond, something called an aviary, and a gazillion dells (why they'd have computers setup all over the place is besides me). oh and swings, but you already know about those.

before you knew it i had gotten through the WHOLE park! phew

it is a sweet place... too bad i got lost in the "boring" jungle part. despite that tromping around the woods being fun i would have liked it to be a reasonable exercise. then i coulda seen the rest of the park. instead of wandering around in circles.

oh well. at least my destination is JUST across the street from here. be in touch once i make contact with my target. assuming the address the university gave me is correct...

the garden of dun-edin (lost part 1)

T-Minus: 29 days...
_
Location: Botanic Garden
Objective: Home

okay, so now i have some information i need in order get a new home here in dunedin.

what is that info you might ask... well you should ask it really, as opposed to maybe asking...

it's an address, and as fortune would have it the place i'm aiming for isn't all that far from the university. all i have to do is once again follow the aqua-duck... or sorry the "leith" as people around here keep insist it is called...

which isn't too bad a walk at all. in fact i'm really digging it. though not quite a fountain or the ocean the leith is really cool. water is just neat stuff.

after just two blocks of following the leith i came across the only major obstacle between the uni and my destination. the dunedin botanic garden. this place is apparently a really special one to the city.

people from all over town come daily to enjoy it's various cool things.

i'm totally following the locals line of logic here... this place has a swing within meters of the entrance! what fun convience!

wow man that was a fun distraction!

though i realized that it was a waste of time, and that fulfilling my government criteria is way more important then swinging!

well okay... after swinging for a few more minutes...

so after that fun little detour, onwards i trekked further into the park. fortunately the whole way the leith was in full view. meaning that the park wasn't too much of an obstacle at all!

my destination was just on the other side of the park and lay along the leith as well. all i had to do was follow the water and i'd be there in no time...

you think that i would have had no problems...

well this is ME people of the web wide world, and just when you think i shoulda learned a lesson or two from all the stuff of the past... well my mini intellect fails me again... or rather in this case my hardwired t-rex/dinosaurian instinct...

you see the vegetation in many portions of the park is just so nice and dense and prehistoricy looking... well i suddenly had an urge to run off into it and roam...

well i kinda got lost...

i'll have to get back to you in a little while... in the meantime need to really get my bearings, and hunt for a hadrosaur... or i mean find my destination...

a poem

okay in light of the fact i've been spending SO much time trying to meet the criteria set by the government i've neglected my other major goal, and that being the improvement of my blog as per my talent agent peter bond's instructions.

so as my mind (being as small as it is) is kinda thinking about bigger things i thought the first of the "personal" touches to my blog would be about who i AM... or maybe more properly what i am...

i came across a poem by a dude named jack prelutsky that has spoken to me (well actually i read it... if it had spoken to me i'd be scared... nobody likes phantom poems!)

Tyrannosaurus was a beast that had no friends,
to say the least.

It ruled the ancient out of doors,
and slaughtered other Dinosaurs.

i know i've said how bad a rep we t-rexs have, but this poem summarizes it i'd say. has my species evolved to the point of being TOO good a killer?
am i nothing more then a beast with no friends... (wait a minute i don't have any friends here in new zealand!!! AHHHHHH)...

though we once ruled the earth as king of the dinos those were the ancient out of doors indeed. is there no place for us in this new age of mammals?

are we t-rexs really nothing more then primal brutes destined to be nothing more then prehistoric killing machines with no place in society?

well i simply have to remember my family reunion 2 years ago...

craig was nice enough to drive me out to a gathering of my various relations and relatives still alive here in the modern worlds...

i had a great time! craig on the other hand, well...

through the actions of t-rexs, like my cousin larry (geez i hate that guy!), this stereotype and perception lives on and is promoted... when not ALL of us t-rexs do it...

now that i'm in a place that only knows a little bit about us dinos (though we t-rexs are the most famous in the world) i must endeavour to NOT fall into the trap of this poem or the tyrannosaur stereotype.

as a constant reminder i've added it to the side panel of my blog...

i'm also going to try and put more of these little thinkings i have up on my blog (not my fault their little thinkings though... you try thinking big with a brain the size of a peanut!). oh and if you bump into peter bond people of the web wide world let him know i've gotten a start on his instructions!

now i really should get back to resolving my countdown of doom issues...
