It's actually a Bosnian picture by director Jasmila Zbanic (who is also screenwriter) that examines the relationship between a mother (Esma) and daughter (Sara) as they define themselves as a family in post-war society, and without a husband/father figure. The former has barely enough money to cover the twosome's living expenses, and relies on the goodwill of friends and acquaintances for little extravagances,
like the class trip Sara wants to take. Sara (Luna Mijovic) has a complex face that's rather unique in its beauty, and she tells us a lot about herself with very simple glances; but make no mistake, Sara is a rowdy character that expresses rage outwardly, and un-self-consciously.
