I watched one more movie yesterday through Netflix last night after I watched Man of La Mancha and Meet Me in St. Louis. I watched the wonderful animated Disney film Up. I had heard great things about it and so I added it to my Netflix queue. I watched it streaming on my computer. I must say I wish I had seen Up in the theater. It looked like it would have been visually stunning on the big screen. It reminded me of the brilliant colors of Finding Nemo.
What is so wonderful about Up is its story. It is not about what I thought it would be about. In fact, I really find it amazing that the movie was ever made at all. I wonder how the creator sold it to the studio. While there are lots of wonderful things in animated films for adults, the main audience is children and this story is mainly about an elderly man who decides to fly his house away so that he can fulfill a dream of his wife who has died. I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall in the office when this film was pitched. The other amazing thing is that one of the other key characters is also an elderly man. Both old men are pretty spry and able to climb ladders, walk on top of an airship, hang from garden hoses, and tow a floating house. I guess this is where the animation helps us to suspend belief.
I also loved the animals in the movie. I loved the dogs who are enabled to talk via electronic devices on their collars. I also really loved that the rare colorful bird is named Kevin by the little boy who is one of the main characters. However, it is a little disconcerting that we find out later on in the film that Kevin is actually a female bird who has three babies waiting for her. That doesn't really seem to matter to the little boy who is so full of innocence and incredible self-determination.
Up reminded me of so many times in my own life when I just wanted to escape my current circumstances. Life got harder than I expected it to be and I wanted to hide or go some place that made me forget the reality in which I was living. I probably wouldn't choose to float away my house with balloons. I am really afraid of heights.
If you haven't seen Up, I highly recommend it. It will warm your heart and keep you laughing. It is just good fun.
Thanks for being a part of my journey!
