One Year Ago Today

One year ago today I began my new job at TriState Habitat for Humanity. I had just moved from Oak Ridge, Tennessee the week before and I was living with my sister Stacey and brother-in-law Rob. Besides them, I didn't know anyone else in Cincinnati.
I remember feeling both very excited and also somewhat anxious. I knew the first week would be full of orientation and just learning my way around. While I was doing the same job as I had been in Tennessee, each Habitat affiliate does things differently. Also, I knew that I was moving to a much larger affiliate that served many more families than my previous affiliate. I wondered to myself if I would ever be able to keep up. It seemed both overwhelming and like a wonderful challenge that I was ready to face.
After one year of working at TriState Habitat for Humanity, I feel filled with gratitude for so many things. I am grateful for a team of people who support me and who share their incredible gifts to help those in need. I am grateful to be working for an organization that respects my talents and the experience that I bring to the table. I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to help families move from living in substandard housing to a safe, decent, affordable home that they own.
What a difference a year makes. It is only by God's grace that I am here. God continues to pour out grace upon grace in new and powerful ways. In the past year I have found healing. I have found community. I reunited with friends. I have been able to experience God's love in new and powerful ways.
I am living a dream. I get to be in ministry. I get to serve the poor. I get to work with an awesome team. I get to wake up every morning and go to a job that I love. This makes all the difference in the world in my life and in my heart. I give God thanks for leading me to TriState Habitat for Humanity. I give God thanks for the gift of this past year.
Thanks for being a part of my journey!

Tasty Tuesday

Cranberry Turkey in a Slow Cooker

Ingredients:
3 turkey breast, thawed in refrigerator ( leftover Turkey is what I used the legs, thighs, and some of the breast)
1 envelope Lipton onion soup mix
1 can cranberry sauce
1/2 cup Catalina salad dressing

Preparation:
Place the turkey in the Crock Pot. Mix together cranberry sauce , salad dressing and soup mix and pour over turkey.

Cook on high for 2 hours if turkey was cooked like mine was since it was leftovers from Thanksgiving or if raw Turkey then high for about 5 to 6 hours!

Dial Diaries- Week 1

I have been selected as one of 100 people from across the country to join the Dial® Healthier You Member Program!  I am very excited since I could definitely use some help right now in the healthy beauty, healthy food and a healthy lifestyle. I am a mom of 6 kids who all have crazy schedules, I am a blogger, a photographer, a wife, and house cleaner and etc. My life is so crazy busy I don't always have the time for myself. I am really gonna try hard to follow these tips and make time for myself.  As part of this program, I will be posting about some wonderful Healthier You tips from Amy Hendel, a Dial® Healthier You program expert. This week we focus on healthy skin and healthy eating!

Week 1: Skin Healthy Foods
Over the next four weeks, I’m going to help you improve your skin and overall health. This week, let’s start with nutrition. They say that you are what you eat, and when it comes to your skin’s health, your food choices can improve your skin’s resilience and clarity, slow the aging process and prevent breakouts. Keeping processed foods to a minimum and focusing on a diet rich in whole foods will help your skin maintain its health. Let’s look at the three major aspects of skin care:

Hydration: To keep your skin from becoming dry, drink lots of water and eat foods like oily fish and flax seed that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Make sure to include foods fortified with biotin like white meat chicken, eggs and Swiss chard to help your body process those healthy fats.

*This is one of biggest challenges. I don't drink enough especially water. Really water is not my favorite drink and I don't drink probably more than 32 Oz's a day so I am really gonna try on this one! I love fish but I am not a huge Chicken fan either or cheeses so we will see ha ha.

Blemish fighters: To fight breakouts, make sure to follow a proper skin care regimen, and include foods rich in zinc like vegetarian baked beans, garbanzo beans and pumpkin seeds.

*This is another one I am really going to try on this one. I not a bean person. I do eat a little bit but not nearly enough. I do like pumpkin seeds but not beans lol.

Anti-aging: Commit to regular use of a broad spectrum SPF, and add vitamin E to your daily diet to prevent skin damage and wrinkles. Foods enriched with Vitamin E include tuna and fortified cereals. Dark chocolate, tea and watermelon contain compounds that will also help you fight skin damage.

* I use a SPF lotion on my face and body everyday after my bath but never thought to add Vitamin E to my diet. This is one I am definitely gonna start doing.

When you go to the supermarket to buy these healthy skin-promoting foods, include Dial® NutriSkin™ body wash, which hydrates and moisturizes while cleansing your skin of impurities. What to learn more? Follow Dial on Facebook or twitter read my tips on twitter under #DialHealthyTips. Stay Healthy!

Disclosure: I am one of 100 participants of the Dial Healthier You Program and wrote this post as a part of a series of Dial® Healthy You content. All opinions are mine and are not influenced by my part in the campaign at all. Your opinions may differ.

Back to Work Tomorrow

It's back to work for me tomorrow. I have a little bit of an idea of what to expect. I have already peeked at my email in box. It's full of all kinds of things I need to address. I also stopped by the office this morning to pick up my paycheck from last week. My desk has some things on it and my mail box is stacked with paper. I looked and there are at least some applications among the stack. That is exciting for me. I feel like there is some real momentum in our application receipts. Hopefully some of my family recruitment efforts are paying off. I also expect there to be some things that I don't know about. I'm sure there may be some mini-crisis to attend to and probably some voice mails to respond to.
I may regret writing this tomorrow but I am really looking forward to going back to work. It is exciting to think about the families who have submitted their applications. I can't wait to review them and determine if TriState Habitat for Humanity may be able to partner with them. I continue to be grateful for this opportunity to serve God and the poor in this way. I feel that each day I work, I am really a part of a vital ministry with and to the poor. For me, it doesn't get much better than this.
Thanks for being a part of my journey!

[Production Note: The convention depicted in this post is fictitious and never happened. We are using pictures from various other events Traumador has attended this year which we were unable to post at the time.]

man the the first ever vivus dinosaur convention has been treating me good in regards to meeting cool palaeontology celebrities!

today was no exception, with me running into legendary palaeo-artist william stout!!!

he was a SUPER nice guy. proving it, he let me talk to him for nearly an hour (how many people at the best of times can put up with me and my tiny brain for that long?!?). not only was mr. stout very nice, but he had a ton of cool things to tell me about making palaeo-art and his interests in palaeo as an artist.
mr. stout also gave me an in depth look at his book dinosaur discoveries. the book is a collection of profiles covering over 60 fairly recently discovered dinosaurs. each profile has entire page sized illustration by mr. stout (all of which are ubber awesome!), and all the factoids the average person could want to know.
it is a fantastic book for expert and non-expert alike, as mr. stout's drawings are in a league of their own. it would make a great x-mas gift for that dino-fanatic in your life! hint hint :P
i had to buy my own copy, and mr. stout was nice enough to not only sign my copy...

as if that weren't enough but he also...
drew me my own little picture of a pachyrhinosaur! (i thought it'd be a little vain of me to ask him to draw a picture of me... so why not my favourite snack from alberta)

i can't say enough good things about mr. stout (other than once again appeal to you to buy one or many of his books or pieces of art :P), and it was a real blast/honour to meet him in person!

The little plate with the bird is so perfectly made and looks awesome! It is a tough necklace too not a flimsy one. I really love how it looks on me. It is definitely a unique and fun necklace. There are so many more things at Lisa Leonard Designs that I would love to own. Hmm I guess its time to hint to my hubby ha ha.

Back Home Again

I made it back home again from a great trip to St. Louis. I'm grateful for my friends Ian and Sheri and their hospitality for the week. It was good to spend time with them and catch up with one another. I ate way too much and was a complete and total sloth. I've got to get back to my walking routine tomorrow.
I'm off for one more day of vacation tomorrow. I've got errands to do and I've got to prepare for my writing class tomorrow night. I think it's going to be a busy day.
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. Thanks for being a part of my journey!

Day 27 Christmas Gift Guide- Cheeky Charlie review & Giveaway ends 12-9

My youngest has been nickname Monkey since she was a few weeks old. Don't ask me why she just has lol. But since then she has really lived up to her nickname alot. When ever she sees monkey stuff now she knows they are hers haha. So we love to buy her things that are monkeys or monkey type of stuff. So when we heard and seen Cheeky Charlie we knew she would love it.

We actually got the Cheeky Carmen and she is absolutely adorable. She is so soft like silk. I love the orange and pink bow and shirt. She definitely is a girly monkey. Her hands Velcro shut so we can hang her from stuff. My daughter loves her to hang around her neck like its giving her a big hug. She love how soft it is. She calls it her soft soft aahh aahh (aah aah is her monkey sounds and what she calls monkeys). She sleeps with it and goes everywhere with it/ This was definitely her favorite toy right now.

So if you have a little one that loves soft stuffed animals or loves monkeys you definitely need to check out Cheeky Charlie and Carmen. They will be a lovable toy at your house like they are at mine!

We are giving one Lucky reader a Cheeky Charlie. Yay!

Boys Action Figures are great presents for the Holidays

What boy these days isn't into superheros or star wars or something to that nature? I know my son loves them all. His favorite super hero is Spider man and Batman. His favorite shows and movies are star wars. Hasbro has those any more. I buy alot of their stuff for my kids for Christmas so I was excited to see new boy action figures that I knew my son would love.

We got a Spiderman 3 inch Action Figure and my son loved it. He says he is collecting super heroes now ha ha. The one we got is fun because you can suction cup one side to one window and the other to the other and watch him slide all the way down to the other side and defeat Green Goblin. Lots of fun and a must have for the boys that love superheroes.

The other thing we got was the STAR WARS ACTION FIGURES WITH GALACTIC BATTLE GAME which his and his friends favorite because not only are they a cool action figure but they come with a competitive gaming base, a unique battle attributes card and a die to play the game and battle each other. They think that is cool and whats better than playing cool games with your friends? These would make awesome gifts for your boys for Christmas as well and both are around $7 so very reasonable. So check them out and everything Hasbro has to offer!

making my own dinosaur

[Production Note: The convention depicted in this post is fictitious and never happened. We are using pictures from various other events Traumador has attended this year which we were unable to post at the time.]

yet another action packed day here at the first ever vivus dinosaur convention.

today i met legendary palaeo-artist brian cooley, dinosaur sculptor extraordinaire! his works grace the halls of some of the best museums in the world... including my old home the royal tyrrell! so i know his art quite well...

turned out today he was leading a special activity secession called "make-a-saurus", and hearing my interest in his palaeo-art mr. cooley invited me to join in.

so what we were doing at "make-a-saurus" was pretty self explanatory and obvious. making our own dinosaur. the thing was i'd never made one before.

in good news mr. cooley had brought everything one could need to create their own dino sculpture. i just had to follow his instructions.
the first part was easy enough. bend wire into the shape of a dinosaur. this wasn't a challenge for my t-rex arms. while they might be short, a tyrannosaurs arms are incredibly powerful for their size!

so having bent all the pieces together i then had to tape them together into the frame for my dinosaur.

well okay, i tried to do this. it turned out to be a lot easier bending the wire than taping it together.

oh and speaking of tape, don't get me started on the stuff...

let's just say we don't get along!

finally having taped the wire together (and untaping me from the counter top!) it was time to beef up our dinosaur's "skeleton" with some foam.

i should point out at this point, that yes i ended up making a ceratopsian. not out of choice mind you, but due to my late entry they'd run out of t-rex kits. oh well, that was fine. at least this way i'd have a visual reference for butchers to look at when i go shopping for triceratops steaks at the supermarket (the human clerks always look at me funny when i ask for them!).

adding all the foam my little trauma-ceratops was starting to look a little healthier.

taping the outside so we had a surface to plaster of paris...

i now had a mummy-ceratops!

the last thing to do (once it'd all dried, and i'd gotten all the tape off me... AGAIN!) was to paint my creation.

you know not bad for a guy whose never taken a single art lesson before!

if you want to learn how to make dinosaurs as awesome at mr. cooley's (cause mine still doesn't remotely compare!) you should check out his book called, coincidental(?), make-a-saurus. it is filled with great tips and ideas for making your own dinosaur artworks.

it would also make a great x-mas gift this holiday season, especially for young dinosaur fans! be sure to pick up your own copy today!

Day 26 of Christmas Gift Guide- Greenleaf Gifts review & Giveaway ends 12-9

We all love great smells. I mean who doesn't love a good scent from something they love? I know I do! So when Greenleaf Gifts ask me to do a review I couldn't say no. I mean I love home fragrances like candles, air fresheners, satchel and stuff and they have it all plus they are gorgeous!

We got the Silver Spruce Signature candle and this makes our whole house smell like a fresh Christmas tree. My husband absolutely loves it! The little box it comes in is beautiful and it makes a awesome Christmas present for everyone and no wrapping necessary.

We also got the Wintercream Holiday candle. This one is my favorite! It is in the most beautiful black and white jar with chrome lid and blue tassel. So elegant and perfect! It has a hint of vanilla and other smells as well but it really smells so creamy and yummy! I love it! Definitely another awesome Christmas gift!

The last thing we got from Greenleaf Gifts was Merry Memories Room Spray. It smells like those cinnamon pine cones they sale around Christmas time. This room spray actually sticks around for a long time so you only need a small little spray. This is something my MIL will love! This is definitely what I am getting her for Christmas.

So if you love great smelling things then check out everything Greenleaf Gifts has to offer. Their variety is huge so there's bound to be something you love or if your getting them as a gift there is definitely something they will love as well.

We are giving one lucky reader 6 great candles from Greenleaf Gifts. What a awesome prize!!

Happy Thanksgiving

day 25 of the Christmas Gift guide- Piggy Paint review & giveaway ends 12-9

Piggy Paint introduce our new TWEEN polish line, "Project Earth" that includes wild, neon colors that my 12 year old and 8 year old have just falling in love with.  There's even a glow-in-the dark polish called "Radioactive". This is their favorite! You can use just the glow in the dark polish by itself or you can put a few coats on over your favorite color to make it glow. My girl just think that is the coolest thing in the whole world and so do their friends. Can you say sleepover and girls night.Oh boy am I in for it lol.
I think Piggy Paint has some of the coolest and funnest colors for kids around.  Best part is it is all natural, non toxic and odorless. With 5 girls in my house who all love their nail and toes painted the odorless and non toxic are a very good thing! The colors also stay on alot better than most too. I love that it is non allergenic as well so I don't have any issues with my 2 year olds allergies. Overall I am very impressed with their paint and polish remover. I will be getting each of my girls some to put into their stocking for Christmas. So if you have girls that love polish you need to check out everything Piggy Paint has to offer. Another great thing is I have a coupon for 10% off everything on their website even the sale items just use the code is ANGELZ101 expiration December 31, 2010.
