I went on a road trip to Northern Kentucky today. I had a meeting with one of our Habitat Partner Families. We hope to be starting construction on this family's house this spring. The purpose of the meeting was so that the future home owner could choose a siding color, carpet color, kitchen counter top, and vinyl flooring. This is always a neat meeting for me. It's an opportunity to touch base with the family before things get really busy with the construction process. It's also wonderful to witness a family who has never been able to make such choices about their home do so for the first time. It can be a bit overwhelming for many families. Often times they bring friends or family members with them to help them in their decision making. I usually just sit back and try to take it all in. Sometimes the family knows exactly what they want and the meeting is really brief. Other times it takes a very long time. The longest meeting like this I attended lasted about two hours. I was glad when that one was over.I've got another meeting like this with a family next week and I am in the process of scheduling a few more before we get into the construction season.
This is a fun time of the year for me. While it means some extra work and takes me out of the office quite a bit, it is really fun for me. I always love any time I get to spend with our Habitat Partner Families. They always seem to inspire me and remind me of why I'm doing what I do. It's another step closer for each family to move from poverty housing to a safe, decent, affordable home of their own.
Thanks for being a part of my journey!
