I just finished watching the last episode of season five of the HBO series The Wire. It's been a wonderful journey through this series. While I could have done with a little less profanity, the stories are awesome. It's one of the best written shows I've ever seen.
What I like about The Wire is that it both challenged me and entertained me. There are characters that both infuriated me and inspired me. There were story lines that caused me to think in new ways about the human condition, politics, education, public policy, the media, crime prevention, and American life and culture.
I know that it's probably not every one's idea of entertainment because it is a show that makes you think and is brutally honest about the moral decay of American cities. The Wire does not have story lines in which everyone lives happily ever after. It's also not escapist entertainment. It's real. It's sometimes really hard to watch. It's sad. It's human. And it is never boring.
So, if you like your entertainment with an edge, I encourage you to try The Wire. You won't be disappointed.
Thanks for being a part of my journey!
