Tanu Weds ManuAccept it or not, we Indians are overtly amused just by the ‘concept’ of marriage, leave alone the actual marriage ceremony. Everything that is related to wedding, right from expensive jewelry and over-the-top apparels to loud song-n-dance sequence and scrumptious food, gives us an adrenaline rush that none can match. And imagine watching the same on the 70mm big screen — an ecstasy which cannot be explained in words. Capitalizing on this, director Anand L Rai brings forth his next work of art, ‘Tanu Weds Manu’. And what do you think is the fate of his latest creation? Well, just as expected, it does well. After all, don’t we love to see everything related to wedding? Yes, just accept it, we have been classically conditioned to love weddings since childhood.
Interestingly, what works for ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ is the same that doesn’t work for it - its familiarity - the ‘been there, done that’ feel. On the lines of ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ too has a sacrificial lover (only in this case he is an NRI but a true Indian by heart, mind it) and a boisterous and bustling female protagonist (a wannabe, if you may say so), who drinks, smokes, uses expletives, is clear-cut and absolutely fearless. But what is different for the film is its treatment — the atmospherics of ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ is sure to captivate you by leaps and bounds. The movie has the right dose of romance, drama and comedy. Now, you may ask what goes wrong then. It is its on-and-off mode - some scenes are downright hilarious and extremely good, but there are others that are absolutely drag.
It is very difficult to come out with a new theme when it comes to portraying the big fat Punjabi wedding — you would always get the feel of seeing it already. Also, the portrayal of a confused girl is not new — we have seen similar plot in ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, ‘Pardes’ and ‘Jab We Met’. But just as we mentioned earlier, that same plot works for ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, thanks to the intricately handled and woven drama and comedy. The cinematography of the movie is exemplary; the pictorial galore and the dazzling canvas of which keeps the momentum going. Even the cityscapes have been shot really well for the movie. The soundtrack of the movie is also to be applauded for, what with Sadi Galli and Jugni becoming chartbusters.
Kudos for the acting department too, for ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ would not have been what it is had it not been for the talented actors! First things first, Kangana Ranaut is exceptional. From her clichéd roles (mentally unstable characters, no offense meant please!) to the portrayal of audacious and zesty Tanu, she has definitely outshined. She is lovable and adorable. As for Madhavan, he has essayed his role with neat perfection and élan. Jimmy Shergill is a surprise package and astonishes us positively. There is a spark in him that gives his role the justice. Rajendra Gupta, K K Raina, Navni Parihaar, Deepti Mishra, Eijaz Khan and Swara Bhaskar are effective and add to the script.
Last Call: If you have nothing to do this weekend and are game for some light fun and romance, go for ‘Tanu Weds Manu’. You sure won’t be disappointed!

Tanu Weds Manu Pre-release Review
Tanu Weds ManuDo not be surprised if you see the posters of ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ revealing the main leads as R. Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut! This peculiar yet delightful love story features two unusual actors paired together for the very first time. Known only for portraying serious and challenging roles (those of a psychopath), Kangana begins this year on a comic note, while Madhavan, who’s already a star with his hilarious ‘3 Idiots’, tries to add another star on his shoulder. Directed by Anand Rai, the movie is produced by Shailesh Singh and Vinod Bachchan, under the banners Paramhans Creations and Soundarya Productions. The peppy and shaadi songs are composed by Krsna and Raj Shekhar. ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ is scheduled to release on 25th February, 2011.
‘Tanu Weds Manu’ is a seedhi saadhi love story that travels through tedhe medhe roads to transform into a blissful marital knot at the end. Manoj Sharma aka Manu (R. Madhavan) is a sweet and shy NRI doctor from London looking for a simple and homely wife. He is intelligent, caring, and belongs to a respectable family. He’s the guy that every family would love to take back home as their dutiful and loyal damaad. But destiny has different plans for him. This comes true when he is pressurized to meet the beautiful, but carefree and extrovert Tanuja Trivedi aka Tanu (Kangana Ranaut) in Kanpur as one of his prospective brides. Tanu, on the other hand, is a small town wild girl who lives by her own rules, hates arrange marriages, and will do anything and everything to marry a guy her parents will disapprove of.
How the two opposites handle each other and whether any chemistry clicks off between the two forms the crux of the story. What happens when two totally diverse personalities cross each other at various occasions? Will the two weave a love story and prove that ‘Marriages are made in heaven’? A new completely genre for Kangana, ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ would show a new side of the actor that we haven’t seen before. Also, chemistry between the two most unlikely of stars is a thing to watch out for in the movie. Sit back and enjoy a light and charming marriage as ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ hits theaters on 25th February, 2011.
