One of the homework assignments that I have for my creative writing class this week is to go on a writer's date. A writer's date is time spent by oneself doing something out of the ordinary of the routine of life. It can be going to a museum, watching a movie, listening to music, going to a market, taking a walk in the woods, or some other activity that will allow me to disengage and recharge.
We read an article about writer's dates in class on Monday. The author talked about how important they are to the creative process. If a writer only spends time writing or thinking about writing, then the creative well can become empty. Writer's dates help to activate the brain in new ways. To expose oneself to a different environment or experience can help generate new ideas and enhance creativity. I definitely found this to be true when I was writing and delivering sermons every Sunday. I often found inspiration when I was not thinking about my sermon. Instead, it was when I was engaged in other activities that some of my best ideas came to me.
I haven't exactly figured out when I'm going to do my writer's date or what I'm going to do. I have a few ideas floating around. It will probably happen over the weekend. I want to try to do something that will expose me to something new, inspiring, and challenging. I also hope to be able to try a different kind of writer's date each week during my writing course.
I will let you know how it goes when I go on my first writer's date. I'm sure there will be a story to tell.
Thanks for being a part of my journey!
