Wandering Indiana

This morning I drove to Dearborn County in Southeast Indiana to deliver family recruitment fliers to public schools. I saw parts of Indiana I have never seen before. It was quite an adventure. I really put my GPS device to the test but thankfully it got me everywhere I needed to be.
I did a little research on Wikipedia about each place that I stopped and I thought I would share what I learned with you.

Lawrenceburg - I stopped in Lawrenceburg first on my journey. The city is located along the Ohio River and is the county seat of Dearborn County. It is home to a huge coal-fueled power plant, a casino, a ski area, and a whiskey distillery. According to the U. S. Census, 14.9% of the population lives below the poverty line so there are definitely families with whom TriState Habitat for Humanity may be able to partner.

Aurora - I visited Aurora during my first month on the job when I began working at TriState Habitat for Humanity. Also located along the Ohio River, this is a beautiful little town with a lot of historic buildings and homes. We have several lots in Aurora and are hoping to be able to build more houses for families in this city. 10.4% of the people in Aurora live below the poverty line.

Moores Hill - Many of the early settlers of this town were Methodists who moved from Delaware and Maryland. I was surprised to learn that Moores Hill is the former home of Moores Hill College which later relocated to Evansville, Indiana and became the University of Evansville. There is one building, Carnegie Hall, remaining from the former college. 17% of the population of Moores Hill live below the poverty line. We have never built a house in Moores Hill but there is definitely need.

Dillsboro - This town was founded in 130 and named after James Dill who was a general in the War of 1812. The Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Dillsboro was built in 1888 and boasts Tiffany stained glass windows and hand-made pews. Just outside Dillsboro is the only privately owned and inhabited Nike Missile Silo in Indiana. Decommissioned in 1969, the silo was renovated into a house. 10.5% of the people of Dillsboro live below the poverty line.

Manchester - I couldn't really find much on this unincorporated community in Dearborn County. It looked like it used to be a little town. It has a very nice new elementary school that was built in 2004.

Greendale - This small town is located near Lawrenceburg and it near the Interstate 275 exit. I get the impression that Greendale is one of the more affluent communities in Dearborn County. I saw some very beautiful historic homes and median income is much higher than the other towns in the county. 5.1% of the population of Greendale lives below the poverty line.

So, those were the towns that I visited on my most excellent adventure of Dearborn County, Indiana. It is a beautiful county with rich farm land and wooded rolling hills. It was a great morning to be wandering through Indiana.
Thanks for being a part of my journey!
